Just days after releasing their next version of a mining bill, Wisconsin Republicans announced on late Friday afternoon that the only public hearing on the bill will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 in a small hearing room at the Capitol in Madison.
Sen. Bob Jauch (D-Poplar) issued this response to the last-minute announcement:
At 4:00 on a Friday afternoon of a three-day weekend, Senator Tom Tiffany announced a public hearing in Madison (of course). It is another arrogant show of disrespect to the citizens of northern Wisconsin who are entitled to have a hearing in the north to give them a chance to speak. Tiffany is acting like the Senate is a 3rd world country by limiting the opportunity for northern Wisconsin citizens to speak. They don’t have the decency to listen to citizens who have a different view on a flawed and unworkable piece of legislation. Today Senator Cullen released an Army Corps of Engineers letter that strongly criticized the Republican bill and said that they couldn’t work with the state under the timetable. While they are ramming the bill through the hearing process I am yet convinced that they have 17 votes and know what the final bill will look like. It is another disgusting display of the democratic process. Speakers will have three minute time limits and Legislators will be limited in their questions. It is not a hearing but a hoax.
People who cannot make the hearing should email their votes directly to Sen. Tom Lehmen (D-Racine) Sen.Lehman@legis.wisconsin.gov and Sen. Tom Tiffany (R-Hazelhurst) Sen.Tiffany@legis.wi.gov. Copy both to ensure your vote is counted. Be sure to include your name and address, and put SB1 in the subject line and in the body indicate it is SB1 you are registering your vote for.
